A Novel Clinical Decision Support System for Diagnosis and Treatment of Heart Failure

Conundrum health care providers and institutions face is how to deliver evidence-based medical care at lower cost to an ever expanding portion of society in need. Translation of clinical studies to daily practice and adoption of national and international guidelines have not met expectations. This disappointing shortfall stems primarily from lack of interface between ever growing and changing vast medical literature and individual patient profile. Concurrently, threats of penalties for underperformance and poor reimbursement related to improper documentation are increasing. Hence, transition to comprehensive clinical decision support systems (CDSS) will not just be inevitable but also rewarding.

Utility for Lipid and Hypertension Management

The cardiovascular disease (CVD) evaluator is a web-based expert system with a patented methodology. It interfaces an individual patient profile with literature. It uses CV disease risk scoring systems, guidelines, and clinical trials data. Once an individual data point (clinical, lipid profile, if available emerging risk factors) is entered, the system makes specific diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations. The references are cited and linked to the journal article.

Web-Based Lipid Management System

The cardiovascular disease (CVD) evaluator is a web-based expert system written in Visual Basic 6 and DotNet and patented by USPO. The system basically comes up with specific diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations for the individual patient from clinical information, lipid profile, emerging risk factors (if available), and advanced lipid profile, including genetic risk factors. It uses published CV disease risk-scoring systems such as Framingham and published guidelines such as NCEP, ITF, ADA, and NKF. The diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations are determined on the basis of clinical trials, which are cited in the reference section of the output and the relevant journal articles can instantly be linked to through an HTML web page.
